HawaiiKidsCAN Action Fund Candidate Survey

Congratulations on filing to run for elected office in Hawaii! Serving our state in this way is a great honor and takes great sacrifice. We at HawaiiKidsCAN Action Fund appreciate your willingness to devote time and energy to making Hawaii an even better place to live and work.

This candidate questionnaire is intended to get a better understanding of your positions and vision on critical education issues. We plan to share responses with our advocates and the public ahead of the upcoming primary election. Past survey responses have been featured in local media outlets such as Civil Beat. We hope that all candidates will take a few minutes to complete it so that we can provide community members with a full picture of the candidates running to represent them in the State Legislature. We will note if no response was received, but we hope that will be infrequent.

5. The Hawaii State Constitution provides for the “establishment, support and control of a statewide system of public schools,” but does not guarantee quality education. Should the State Constitution be amended to provide quality education as a fundamental right? Should Hawaii students have a constitutional right to a quality education? Please explain your answer.

6. What will you do to improve the relationship between the Hawaii State Board of Education and legislature?

7. What leadership actions will you take for the Hawaii Department of Education, University of Hawaii system, and employers to work more effectively together?

8. College going remains flat, with roughly 50% of recent Hawaii public high school graduates going on to college (2 or 4 year). How do you propose to raise these levels so Hawaii is more competitive with states like California, which has a nearly 65% rate?
